PURPOSE:To improve the light emitting efficiency of a gas discharge display element by dividing one or both of a pair of electrodes formed on one substrate into more than two in a discharge space, and using a gas discharge display element having multiple discharge cavities to move and expand a discharge. CONSTITUTION:A pair of electrodes 2 formed on a substrate are arranged in a discharge space, and one or both of the electrodes 2 is divided into more than two in the discharge space, and an electrode group which consists of these divided electrodes 2 forms discharge cavities more than two with spaces different from each other to have a discharge cavity group in which a discharge is generated in one of discharge cavities of the pair of electrodes, and thereafter, the discharge is moved to the other divided electrode 2. A gas discharge element can thereby emit the light easily with high efficiency. A flat thin type gas discharge display panel having the excellent display quality can be obtained by arranging these gas discharge display elements in matrix and selectively turning each element ON/OFF.
