A system for composting materials in containers consists of a container (1) which receives the compostable material (2) and which has a perforated floor plate (3) to allow aeration of the material (2), and a compost removal device (15). Novelty is that at least 1 side wall (4) of the container has an opening (5) which extends along the length of the side wall (4), and through which the removal device (15) can be introduced into the container (1). USE/ADVANTAGE - Used in the composting of materials in enclosed containers where a mechanical system for removal of the composted material is provided. The removal of the composted material is achieved without the need to tilt the containers, and without the use of conveyor systems built into the individual containers.
