The radio has a tuner with a transmitter regulator for preselection or searching, an FM demodulator and an audio amplifier. Within the unit is a transmitter identification module that operates together with a memory. A test unit allows the reception quantity to be continuously monitored for a primary transmitter. The check is made on the basis of receiver field strength and noise level. Changeover to an alternative transmitter is effected by generating an input to a control unit coupled to the tuning selector.
