The electronic compass is contained in a two-part cylindrical housing (1). The upper part (2) contains the magnetic coils and ferromagnetic cores in a both of oil, while the lower part (3) contains the electronic components on p.c.b. (7). The three part sensing coil (9) is mounted on a central ferromagnetic pillar (8). Mounted on the top of the pillar via a 'cardana' universal joint is a ring-shaped field coil (12), supported on a circular plate (11). The coil consists of winding segments (15), separated by divider plates (16), and connected to the central pillar by Litz wires (22).
