GLASS FOR LASER AND PRODUCTION THEREOF

PURPOSE:To enable obtaining of an optional shape and refractive index distribution and improve laser emitting characteristics and optical amplifying characteristics by incorporating Y2O3, Al2O3 and rare earth element oxide as essential components into the glass. CONSTITUTION:A glass raw material containing (a) Y2O3, Al2O3 and a rare earth element oxide as essential components is inserted into (b) a quartz glass tube and then locally heated to melt the component (a) and simultaneously soften the component (b). The softened component (b) is then drawn or drawn into a wire to cool the component (b) and the component (a) therein. Thereby, the subject glass having a composition of the formula (Ln is rare earth element) is obtained.
