PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound in high purity and yield by oxidizing an easily available 2-alkyl-6-acylnaphthalene, separating the obtained compound from the system, precipitating and removing impurities from the resultant mother liquor by concentration, cooling, etc., and reusing the purified liquor in the reaction. CONSTITUTION:A 2-alkyl-6-acylnaphthalene produced by the acylation of an easily available 2-methylnaphthalene is oxidized with an O2-containing gas in acetic acid solvent in the presence of a catalyst containing Co and Mn to obtain 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid. In the above process, the mother liquor left after the separation of 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid crystals from the reaction product is partly or totally cooled or concentrated and cooled, the precipitated impurities are removed and the purified liquor is reused in the oxidation reaction. The process is industrially advantageous, because 2,6- naphthalenedicarboxylic acid useful as a raw material for high performance polyester can be produced in high purity and yield. |
