PURPOSE:To provide a brake having excellent strength, toughness, wear resistance, oxidation resistance, etc., by using a carbonaceous composite material consisting of inorganic fibers obtained from specific polycyclic aromatic polymers as reinforcing materials and an inorganic substance having the same composition as that of the fiber as matrix. CONSTITUTION:One or more selected from (A) an inorganic fiber which is obtained from a silicon-containing polycyclic aromatic polymer and comprise a carbonaceous material showing a crystal arranged state of radial structure, etc., derived from a polycyclic aromatic compound, crystalline carbon in a non-orientated state and a Si-C-O substance and (B) an inorganic fiber which is obtained from a metal-containing polycyclic aromatic polymer and comprise a carbonaceous material in a crystal arranged state, crystalline carbon in a non-orientated state and a Si-M-C-O substance (M is Ti, Zr or Hf) are prepared. The fibers are used as a reinforcing material and a carbonaceous inorganic substance having the same composition as that of the component A or the component B is utilized as matrix to give the title carbonaceous composite material. Then the composite material is used to produce a brake. |
