The present invention relates to the process for the preparation of β-lactams, namely 6-alpha-amino- penicillinase and 7-alpha-amino-deacetoxy-cephalosporins, free of halogen-containing solvents, by acylating a 6- aminoacyl-penicillin (6-A A), 7-amino-deacetoxy- cephalosporin, or a derivative thereof, in a halogen-free solvent.
