A printer has a function for providing the error message through a speaker to the user. The printer comprises a data receiving means for receiving the data from a computer, a main CPU for controlling a slave CPU and other sections, a control memory means including RAM and ROM, a driving means for driving the output section, a printing means, and a voice message providing means connected with the main CPU. The error message is stored into a memory IC (7A). The digital data from the memory IC is converted into the analog voice signal by a D/A converter (7B).
