PURPOSE:To eliminate the need of preliminary scanning and to rapidly form a color image by judging whether forming the image of remaining color is necessary or not at the time of scanning for forming a first one-color image out of plural colors. CONSTITUTION:When automatic color selection mode copying (ASC) is specified by an operating part 4 and the command of copying is given, an original is scanned and optically read by the scanner of a reading part 1, and black, blue and red color information which is obtained by color separation is converted to electrical signals, and also blue and red signals are counted by a corresponding incorporated counted, and a black image is formed on a photosensitive drum of a recording part 3 through an image processing part 2. In the process of forming the image, whether scanning for forming the blue image is necessary or not is judged by a control part 5 based on the contents of the counter in the reading part 1, and then, in the case that the scanning is necessary, the blue image is formed, and following red image forming is also controlled so as to form the color image, and then, the color image is transferred on a recording paper. By such a constitution, the need of the preliminary scanning is eliminated and the multicolor image is rapidly formed.
