PURPOSE:To suppress the number of piercing points to the minimum by discriminating a shape of a workpiece or a shape of a worked article by using a shape recognizing device and a numerical controller for working and discriminating whether or not an opening from a piercing point is necessary by a controller. CONSTITUTION:The coordinate data of four end points of the workpiece are given to the controller 14 from the workpiece shape recognizing device 13 and the shape data of a first worked article are inputted from the numerical controller 11 for working. The controller 14 discriminates whether or not the opening is necessary by providing the piercing point in the vicinity of the worked article by the shape data from the controller 11 or whether or not working can be started from the optional position of the workpiece. In the case of the worked article, since it is necessary to cut from an inside circle, the controller 14 discriminates that the opening is necessary and the piercing point is set. A working starting command is outputted to the controller 11 and commands are given to a laser beam oscillator 19 and motors 17a and 17b for driving to open the piercing point and then, the inside circle is cut from the point.
