A Pt-Pd alloy catalyst is produced by agitating a mixed soln. of 7.5g H2PtCl6 6H2O, 3.33g PdCl2, 0.1l hydrochloric acid and 1.2l distilled water at roomm temp. for 30 min, adding 95g active carbon powder and 1l distilled water to the mixt. heating the mixt. upto 50 deg.C, adding 1.2l sodium carbonate soln. to the mixt. and precipitating its metal salt to the active carbon, maturing the precipitated soln. and heating it at 80 deg.C, reducing the metal salt by adding 0.35l satd. formaldehyde soln. to the soln. and agitating the mixt. for 1 hr, washing and filtering the reduced soln., and drying the filtered catalyst in the vacuum dryer at 40 deg.C for 15 hr. The catalyst has a high activity and selectivity.
