The invention relates to a cheque or giro cheque (postal order) and to the corresponding cheque book. On the back (3) of the cheque (1) are printed, on a layer of ink to be scratched off (4), letters forming a grid. By scratching off certain letters, following a coded order and selection, figures are exposed which together form a coded number. Any error or attempt at fraud by someone who does not know the code word is then immediately apparent. Application: theftproof cheque which a shopkeeper or bank clerk is able to refuse at a glance. <IMAGE>
