The invention relates to an optical device consisting of a source supplying a polarized beam of light (1) and means (2) for splitting this beam into a reference beam (3) and a measurement beam (4). The measurement beam follows a path associated with the distance to be measured. The means (2) recombine the said beams. Other means (10) give the two beams mutually orthogonal states of polarization before recombining them. Means (11) are provided for analysing the state of polarization of the recombined beam.
