Induction furnace (1) provided with a lengthwise passage (3) for metal articles (7) conveyed by a means of transport (8). In order to avoid having to stop the heating and to empty the furnace before bringing it back into operation in the event of a temporary stoppage of the forward travel of the articles (7), a set of secondary inductors (20) arranged around the main inductor, in adjustable positions, is provided. During a stoppage the main inductor (2) is stopped and the articles are heated by means of the secondary inductors (20). The process applied consists in keeping the articles (7) at respective temperatures defined by the positions which they occupy along the furnace. Each of these temperatures is that which the articles have while passing the corresponding location during the normal operation of the furnace. The same process permits the heating to be started up with articles stationary in the furnace.
