The detector arrangement (30) is exposed to the full length of the scan line (15), preferably being configured to be responsive to light reflected toward it from substantially any point on the surface (21) along the full length of the scan line (15). One embodiment includes an optical element (140) disposed along the scan line (115) intermediate the scan line (115) and the detector arrangement (130).
