In cross-country skiing in particular, it is desirable to be able to vary the tightness of the ski. By reducing the tightness, for example when going uphill, a better hold is obtained. By increasing the tightness, for example when skiing downhill, better slide is obtained. The possibility of varying the tightness of the ski has been achieved by using the piezoelectric effect. By applying an electrical voltage to a piezoelectric material, mechanical stretching of the piezoelectric material is obtained, so that the tightness of the ski is modified.
