Process for the treatment of solid or liquid toxic or polluting waste, comprising a gasification followed by a combustion, and device for making use of this process. The waste is subjected in a first reactor (1) to a gasification in a dense fluidised bed (5) at a slightly elevated temperature, preferably lower than 900 DEG C, comprising a short residence time of the volatile matter given off, and the volatile matter given off and the divided solid matter separated during the gasification are then subjected to a combustion (2) in a separate second reactor as a bed driven in downward flow with melting of the inorganic residues formed, preferably at a temperature higher than 1200 DEG C.
