An articulated arm has several arm segments (2a to 2f) which are connected to one another by hinges (4a to 4f). A probe is connected to a front arm segment (2f). Angular displacement sensors are provided on the hinges (4a to 4f) of the articulated arm in order to produce angle signals. Tomographic images of the body of a patient are displayed on a cathode ray tube. The angle signals are converted into tomographic position signals corresponding to the tomographic images on the cathode ray tube. In response to the tomographic position signals, the position of the tip of the probe (3) is displayed on the cathode ray tube with a marker.
