Method for the longitudinal welding of the edge parts of a small-diameter metal tube (1), in which method the tube is made to progress longitudinally along a horizontal axis in a laser welding head (20), at a substantially constant distance from the system for focusing this head, the edge parts of the generatrix of the tube having been brought together beforehand into one of its planes of symmetry, and the laser radiation is focused at a distance of a few millimetres from the external angle edges of the edge parts to be welded. The distance of the edge parts to be welded to the axis of progression of the tube and the position of the focal spot of the laser radiation are fixed to predetermined values, and the distance between the edge part of the welding head close to the tube and the external angle edges of the edge parts to be welded and the position of the focal spot of the laser radiation are adjusted as a function of these values, so as to keep constant the distance between this focal spot and the external angle edges of the edge parts to be welded.
