There is disclosed a lifting apparatus for use on a transport vehicle having a base frame, the apparatus comprising: a first lever arm having one end pivotally mounted on the frame and an opposite end; a second lever arm comprising a lever portion pivotally mounted at one end to the opposite end of the first arm, and a manipulator portion rigidly extending the lever portion opposite the one end thereof, the manipulator portion being pivotally connectable to a container; a torque generating device to provide a torque which opens or closes an angle between the first and second lever arms; and a constraining device provided on the frame and the container to constrain motion of the container as desired. Preferably, the torque generating device comprises a power jack connected to the frame and second lever arm. The invention may be used to provide a container lifting apparatus which can tilt or dump, load or unload and elevate a container.
