Joint for vehicle exhaust - has soft seal between two radial ring surfaces on pipes

Two pipes (1,2) esp. for a vehicle exhaust, are sealed by a soft seal (4) fitted between two radial ring surfaces of the pipes. At least one hard, radially tensioned and axially held seal (3) is also used. The soft seal width and the ring surface spacing are set so that sealing contact between the seal and ring surfaces only occurs at a preset temp. The soft seal contracts elastically on cooling. ADVANTAGE - Reduced seal wear in a more compact assembly.
