The operating piston (1) for the dryplate clutch, or the friction brake, is fitted with a cup spring (3) located on a shaped thrust surface (41) of the piston and just out of contact with the thrust plate (4) of the clutch/brake. As the spring is compressed with increasing piston travel, so it rolls on the shaped thrust surface and provides a progressively hardening reaction. The rolling action on the shaped thrust surface effectively reduces the length of spring and hence hardens the reaction.
