Thermal transfer recording material has a substrate and a printing ink layer of (a) a lower thermal transfer zone (layer) contg a resin (I) having 30 reticulated structure with porosity A and a thermally fusible ink in the reticulated structure; and (b) an upper thermal transfer zone (layer) contg a finely porous structure of a resin (II) with a porosity B less than porosity A and a thermally fusible wax component in the porous structure. The material may also have a heat-resistant protective coating on the back, pref contg silicone, fluorinated, polyimide, phenolic or melamine resin or nitrocellulose; and an adhesive layer, between the substrate and transfer layers, pref of EVA, vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, ethylene/acrylate copolymer, polyethylene, polyamide, polyester, petroleum resin or nylon, with a thickness of 0.2-2.0 microns. (I) and (II) are compatible with one another and pref consist of vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer or vinyl chloride, polyester, epoxide polycarbonate, phenolic, polyimide, cellulose, polyamide or acrylic resin. The substrate is heat-resistant and pref consists of polyester, polycarbonate, triacetylcellulose, nylon, polyimide, 'Cellophane' (RTM), parchment paper or capacitor paper. The ink is a gel, pref contg a colourant (C black, phthalocyanine pigments or direct, acid, basic, disperse or oil-soluble dyestuffs) and a binder. The binder in the lower layer and wax in the upper pref is beeswax, carnauba whale, japan, candelilla, rice bran, montan, paraffin, microcrystalline, oxidised, ceresin or ester wax, ozocerite, margaric, lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, arachnic or behenic acid, USE/ADVANTAGE - The material is useful eg for printers and facsimile equipment. It can be used repeatedly with min redn in the originally high print density.
