In an oxygen sensor, in the form of an electrochemical potentiostatic cell system with two or more electrodes, the novelty is that the oxygen is reduced at the measuring (work or sensor) electrode and enters the electrolyte in the form of OH(-) and/or O(2-) ions and/or H2O molecules which are oxidised back to gaseous O2 at the counterelectrode with little or no electrolyte consumption, an oxygen pumping action thus being effected in the cell. ADVANTAGE - Oxygen is not stored in the cell in the form of reaction products (oxides) of the counterelectrode reaction. so that electrode material consumption does not occur.
