A battery includes a negative electrode (5) of lithium metal or lithium alloy, a positive electrode (7), and an electrolyte (6) wherein the lithium metal or lithium alloy of the negative electrode (5) has a bulk density no greater than 75% that of standard lithium and no less than 25% that of standard lithium, thereby to increase the effective surface area of lithium metal or lithium alloy exposed to the electrolyte. Preferably, the lithium metal or lithium alloy is electro-deposited on a base material (9) such as a metal foil.
