Disclosed is a non-linear resistor switching element comprising on a substrate (1) a first conductor, on the first conductor (2) an insulator (3) and on the insulator a second conductor (4). The insulator (3) is a highly insulating organic electrolytic polymer film formed by an organic material which is electrolytically polymerized in an alkali hydroxide solution, or a basic alcohol solution containing alkali hydroxide as an supporting electrolyte. An active matrix type liquid crystal display panel using these non-linear resistor switching elements instead of conventional MIM elements exhibits a better contrast and is easier to manufacture. <IMAGE>
