A sensitive accelerometer provides signals for use in stabilising the flight of a projectile such as a guided missile, but during launch of the missile, may be subjected to high shock accelerations which can damage its acceleration-sensitive element. An accelerometer which minimises the likelihood of such damage comprises a flexible beam 1 which is able to deform resiliently in the z- direction to measure acceleration in that direction and which is able to move as a whole in the x, y plane transverse to this direction. During launch the movement of inertial mass 2 causes the beam 1 and its supporting members 3, (4), to pivot about one of edges 7, 8 until restrained by one of abutments 9, 10. The beam is returned to its central position under the action of spring 11 when the high acceleration phase is past. <IMAGE> |
