Locking system for sue with individual keys on a group or centrallised basis is based on a spring loaded tumbler (4) and magnet (5, 6) rotating in an encased (1) cylinder barrel (2) so as to drop into slots (3) in response to key action (7) when its magnets (8, 9) cooperate with those in the tumbler. The magnet flux of the magnet(s) in the key flows at right angles to that between the magnets in the tumbler. When the tumbler is in the down or locked condition, with the key inserted, the centre line between the magnet fluxes in the tumbler lies between the outer ends of the magnets incorporated in the key. If the tumbler has two or magnets viewed in the movement direction of the tumbler the magnets placed in a nonmagnetic part of the tumbler, the key should also have magnets to cooperate with these.
