PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound having a relatively low molecular weight and a high functionality with a reduced amount of a catalyst to be used, by polymerizing tetrahydrofuran, etc. in the presence of a ring opening polymerization catalyst, e.g. fuming sulfuric acid, in specific two stages, and hydrolyzing the resultant polymer to remarkably increase the catalytic efficiency. CONSTITUTION:Tetrahydrofuran or its mixture with another copolymerizable cyclic ether is polymerized in the presence of a ring opening polymerization catalyst consisting of fuming sulfuric acid and/or fluorosulfuric acid essentially, and the resultant polymer is then hydrolyzed to give a polyether glycol. The monomer is brought into contact with the catalyst at -30-+10 deg.C and polymerized in the first step of the polymerization reaction, and the reaction temperature is increased to a temperature of 0-40 deg.C and at least 10 deg.C higher, than that in the first step at conversion >=5% into the polymer in the second step to carry out the polymerization. EFFECT:No coloring and solidification of the polymerization system at a high conversion. USE:A raw material for polyurethane, elastic polyester, elastic polyamide, etc. |
