System which incorporates a laser which radiates light at a specific wavelength through a sample chamber and means for measuring the power of the light at the exit from the chamber and/or the sound inside the chamber. This system is used for detecting the presence of a gas in an enclosure, irrespective of its concentration. <IMAGE>
