The electrolyte (6) may be formed with a concentration gradient of said first material across it, or may be formed in two or more distinct layers having differing concentrations of the first material therein. The battery may be a lithium battery containing volatile constituents such as propylene carbonate (PC) or ethylene carbonate (EC) and water as a contaminant which could react with the lithium metal or alloy (5).
