2079228 9114613 PCTABS00007 The invention relates to a variable ratio drive mechanism which operates to adjust the path of an endless drive belt (34) in response to a remotely located control input. Circumferentially spaced sheave segments (32) include multiple camming surfaces (76) opposed engagement blocks (52, 54) and tooth-like formations (46). The engagement blocks (52, 54) are slidably spring-biased (60) with the tooth-like formations (46) to detent the sheave segment (32) against radial movement. Each sheave segment (32) is engaged by the drive belt (34) through a predetermined arc of rotation. When a sheave segment (32) is moved radially, the camming surfaces (76, 78) slide along follower surfaces (80, 82) until the engagement blocks (56, 58) are disengaged from the tooth-like formations and move up one or more notches. Oppositely disposed mating teeth (46) lock against radially inward forces. The drive belt (34) may include a urethane friction member (34B) with an integral strength member (34A) composed of arimid fiber or equivalent material.
