The shock wave generator uses a flat coil (4) coupled to a HV source (11) facing a membrane (3) across one side of a liquid-filled housing (1). The membrane (3) comprises an insulating carrier plate (8) with an electrically conductive surface coating (9) and is attached to the liquid-filled housing (1) around the edge (14) of the carrier plate (8). The material of the carrier plate (8) is insensitive to cavitation and exhibits resilient flexure characteristics around its peripheral edge (14). The applied conductive surface coating (9) facing the flat coil (4) is relatively insulated from the HV terminals (17,18) of the latter. Pref. the carrier plate (8) is made up of an elastomer or rubber material.
