The prepn. of ortho-substd. aryl carboximido esters (I) comprises reacting a nitrile of formula (II) with an alcohol of formula R1OH (III) with hydrogen- chloride or bromide under pressure and at -10 to +50 deg. C, opt. in the presence of a diluent and then converting the hydrochloride or hydrobromide to the free base. R = F, Cl, Br or 1-4C alkyl; R1 = 1-4C alkyl; R2 = H, Me, MeO, F, Cl, Br or CF3; X = Cl or Br.
