PURPOSE:To enhance high efficiency emission and exhibit a stable and satisfactory driving characteristic by providing a seed fire discharge electrode which forms a seed fire near a pair of main electrodes covered with a dielectric body to facilitate the generation of discharge. CONSTITUTION:A pair of main discharge electrodes 4 covered with a dielectric body generating gas discharge and a seed fire discharge electrode 2 covered with a pair of dielectric bodies near the electrodes 4 are provided. When a seed fire discharge having memory function is employed, and the electrodes 4 are discharged by use of this discharge as a fire source, the drive with a low voltage short pulse is possible, and the discharge is facilitated. Hence, the emission efficiency can be easily improved, and a stable driving characteristic can be obtained. Further, the voltage modulation of emission strength is also made possible, and satisfactory display quality and driving characteristic are exhibited in the matrix arrangement. |
