After closure of gas bleed valves, a dense suspension which has been pumped into a pressure vessel is subjected to pressure from gas having no reaction with the suspension and which pneumatically conveys suspension into a pressure filter of sheet or candle type, which separates some solids from that batch of suspension. After filtration, the residual unfiltered suspension is returned to the pressure vessel, i.e. under the force of gravity to a pressure vessel at lower level; the cycle can then be repeated. Pressure vessel vol. exceeds filter vessel vol. by at least 10%, pref. up to 100%, and pressure in the larger vessel is maintained until the formed cake is 10-50 mm thick.
