A hollow cylinder (2) is arranged as an afterburner at a distance from the burner (1), and in the flow direction of the exhaust gases. It stretches over the entire flow cross-section of the gases, and openings (7) are disposed within the cylinder. Plates (8) project from the holes towards the inside, on the cylinder, and the openings (1) form a circle. In an atmospheric pressure burner, the cylinder forms a restriction e.g. by a plate with a central hole in it across the outlet. In a pressure-blown burner, the cylinder is mounted in the region of the outlets of the flame tube (1) and spaced from it, and the burner is so adjusted that the cylinder flows at least around the outlet edge.
