The winder for an uninterrupted winding of threads running from top to bottom includes a protective plate which after insertion of the carrier into the start position can be driven into the gap between the full spool and the cross spool which is to be formed. The protective plate is a swivel plate (45) which is fixed for swivel movement on a support (47) which can be moved up from a rest position into a protective position so that the swivel plate moves with its swivel axis (50) secantially through the path of movement which the spool spindle with the mepty sleeve (21) crosses on the way from its waiting position intot he start position. The swivel plate (45) is vertically aligned so that it dips into the gap between the spool spindles from the sides remote from the thread path and adjoins with spring tension the spool spindle with empty sleeve. ADVANTAGE - The spool is offered constant protection.
