PURPOSE:To obviate displaying of patterns which do not require lead shapes, etc., by nontwist orienting the liquid crystals in the parts of a pair of electrode substrates where the electrodes are not opposed to each other in a twisted nematic type liquid cyrstal display device. CONSTITUTION:Orientation treatment for orienting liquid crystal molecules 8 in the direction orthogonal to the orientation direction of the liquid crystal molecules of a lower oriented film 7 formed on the surface of a lower substrate 2 is applied in the regions 6a corresponding to the actual display patterns of an upper oriented film 6 formed on the surface of the upper substrate 1 of a liquid crystal display device, and orientation treatment for orienting the molecules 8 in parallel (the direction is exactly opposite) with the orientation direction of the liquid crystal molecules of the film 7 is applied in the regions 6b other than the regions 6a. Thereby, the molecules 8 corresponding to the regions 6b are oriented in nontwist, hence in the region B, light is advanced straightforward without rotary polarization, and the dislay of unnecessary patterns corresponding to the shapes of leads 4a, etc. is obviated, thus the wiring design of the leads 4a, etc. is easily accomplished. |
