The invention relates to a device and method for determining the time of occurrence of a sampling time (t n) in a time period that extends from a first measurement time (ta) to a second measurement time (t b). The number of cycles (Xn) of a clock signal (CLK) is counted between tn and tb and the number of cycles(Yn ) of the clock signal (CLK) is counted between t a and tb. The count signals (Xn) and (Yn) are corrected to (X nc) and (Y nc) in response to phase signals (an ) and (bn) representing the phase of the clock signal (CLK) at measurement times (ta ) and (t b) respectively; and the sampling time (tn) is measured relative to the measurement time (ta) by determining the quotient (Xnc/Ync).
