Ocean deposits of ore are milled in no more than 2mm, the K and Mg-containing minerals extracted electrostatically using known conditioning agents, the superfine and coarse fractions removed by screening, the medium fraction treated with saturated NaCl solution to remove further unwanted minerals and the sulphatic residues removed by froth flotation and filtering. The conditioning agent may be salicylic and lactic acids, and flotation is aided by Na sulphoxystearate. The product is dewatered using a centrifuge and can be used in chloralkali electrolysis or as sodium chloride. The initial oceanic ore is a mixture of sylvite, carnallite kieserite, anhydrite and NaCl.
|
