Process comprises the following steps, (1) heating a silicon dioxide powder in the presence of a phase conversion promoter to form a sinter that has a cristobatile crystal phase, (2) moulding or re-pulverising the sinter, (3) placing the moulded sinter in a vessel of desired shape or, if step (2) was re-pulverisation, collecting sinters in the shaped vessel, (4) heat-melting in vacuo to effect vitrification.
