This invention relates to novel 2-substituted-1(4)-aryl piperazines and to a process for their preparation. The compounds of this invention have been found to have cardiovascular, primarily antiarrhythmic effects and are of the following general formula I <IMAGE> I wherein R is hydrogen, lower alkyl or benzyl; and R1 and R2 are the same or independently hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or halogen; Z is <IMAGE> -NR3-CH2-, -OCH2-, -NR3-, -O- or -NR3SO2- and Q is (C1-C4) alkyl-SO2-NR4- or <IMAGE> R3 is hydrogen, lower alkyl, allyl or loweralkoxyloweralkyl; and included in the descriptors of the compounds of Formula I is the proviso that when R4 is methyl then <IMAGE> must be in the 2 position of Formula I.
