The methionine salvage pathway which is normally used to produce polyamines using ATP as a carbon source, can provide significant amounts of homoserine for use in biosynthesis of threonine, threonine derivatives and methionine precursors. Specifically, a cell is engineered to produce S-adenosylmethionine hydrolase, thereby providing a synthetic route to the above compounds which avoids feedback regulation upstream of homoserine, and which relies on a carbon source (ATP) that is replenished as a priority. |
