This device includes, in a ship of the methane tank type, on the one hand, a self-supporting tank (1) resting on the bottom (33) of the double hull (2) via a plurality of support blocks (5) secured to the tank (1), each support block being supported by a support bracket secured to the bottom (33) of the double hull (2) and, on the other hand, a means for gathering and retaining leaks of cryogenic liquid which leaks are capable of arising through damage to the wall of the tank (1); this means is a dish (32) lining the entire bottom of the double hull (2) in line with the tank (1) and rising up the sides (34) along the walls (35) of the double hull over sufficient height to contain the leaking cryogenic liquid. Preferably, the dish (32) is associated with a drying-out device including a cryogenic pump for raising the leaking cryogenic liquid. <IMAGE>
