A DC electric furnace for melting metal, which is capable of melting scrap quickly and reducing cold spots and hot spots developing on the furnace wall. The furnace is provided with an upper electrode, a plurality of furnace-bottom electrodes or a plurality of electrode units comprising a large number of diametrally small furnace-bottom electrodes divided into units, and current control thyristor circuits individually controlling current flowing in each of a plurality of furnace-bottom electrodes or each of a plurality of electrode units. Instead of said current control thyristors, a current control thyristor circuit to control electric current in each of a plurality of groups, into which a plurality of said furnace-bottom electrodes, a large number of furnace-bottom electrodes, or a plurality of said electrode units are divided, may be provided.
