A lateral element, particularly a front one and preferably forming the front pillar located between the front window upright and the longitudinal member comprises two panels (10, 20) in which one (10) of these panels is like a sail (11) with a rim (111) having a bent-back fin section (112) locally bordering this sail (11) and with a reinforcement (113) in this sail (11) along this rim (111), and the other (20) of these panels is like a long straight shell (21) curved into an approximately Z-shaped configuration with a central web (211) extended and bordered by a flat (212) capable of fitting this fin section (112) and by a flank (213) capable of fitting this reinforcement (113) so that when these panels (10, 20) are joined together they form a hollow beam (1020) delimited by the said rim (111), reinforcement (113), web (211) and flat (212).
