The coupling uses a symmetrical connector (10) which receives the optical fibres at opposite ends. Each optical fibre is fitted to a base (16) with a guide (17) for the stripped optical fibre end and is held in place by a clamp piece (11) and a pressure sleeve (18). The base (16) has stop edges (12) for the end face of the optical fibre outer sheath and a cooperating depression (13). Pref. the stop edges (12) and the end faces of the depression (13) each lie at an angle to the vertical. ADVANTAGE - Accommodates different optical fibre sheathing thicknesses.
