A belt conveyor for transporting individual items, e.g. sausages to be aligned and finally transferred into a separate container (3) is divided into narrow parallel belts (13, etc.) jointly driven and transversly supported at longitudinal intervals. The belt-sections which carry a friction-reducing coating, are mounted on rotatable rollers (16) in the corners of plastic support bars (14, etc.) held on mandrels (22,23) movable perpendicular to the general conveyor direction. Alternate belt sections stop short of a lifting rake (2) which after the moving items encounter a stop (44) lifts them to the container (3) above the conveyor plane. Sleeves (28) at the outer ends of the mandrels (22,23) are engaged by projecting control cams (29). ADVANTAGE - Items are readily transferred, and the conveyor can be quickly and effectively cleaned.
